The main aim of American Football is the movement of the football towards the end zone of the opposition and to ultimately get to the end zone of the opposition (touchdown). This aim can be achieved by running along with the ball unless overpowered or by throwing the football to some teammate.
Downs or Chances
Downs are considered to be the most vital part of any NFL game. The offensive members or team would move the ball in the forward direction of around 10 yards. The offensive team has four chances (downs) for gaining the 10 yards. Every time the football is advanced around 10 yards in the four chances, additional first down (chance) is earned. There are 4 chances more to advance another 10 yards.
In case the offensive team is not able to advance 10 yards in the four chances or downs, then the possession gets surrendered. Mostly, the football is given to the defending members or team on the 4th down.
In an American Football, there are a total of 11 players in each team upon the field at the game time.
The timing of the American Football game is divided into 4 15 minutes quarters. There are 3 time-outs on half for each football team. The time-out is of 12 minutes. There is also a 15-minute overtime for sudden death if the scores get tied.
The touchdown in the game is worth 6 points. This is scored as a particular team trespasses the goal line of the opposition with the football or collects or catches the ball at the field’s end zone. The field goal has a worth of 3 points and is generally attempted on 4th down when the kicker gets quite close to the field’s end zone for kicking the ball across the posts. There is an earning of an extra point when a team member kicks the ball across the uprights on a touchdown.
Any team can get 2 points by moving the ball again to the field’s end zone. Additional two points are given to the offensive team as a safety in case the offensive team’s member gets tackled along with the ball in the self end zone.
Playing the Match
When a particular team has the possession of the football (on offense), then the main aim is to advance the football forward to the end zone or to advance the ball at least 10 yards in 4 attempts. If the team fails to achieve so, the ball is then returned to the opponent team. If the offensive team is able to take all the four chances and is not able to move the ball, the ball gets returned to the opposing team at the same point in the field. As a result, the defense is now the offense at the same place wherein the offensive team was stopped.
The new offense now has the opportunity to kick the ball to the members of the opponent team to score a chance. They have the opportunity to kick the ball as far as possible, away from the end zone.
These are the basic rules and regulation of playing the famous American Football.
